PLEASE: The Crucible by Arthur Miller,Why is the title so apporoiate? ?

Well according to the second definition "a severe test" the story was a big test of the whole town's faith, religion, pride and honor. I read it last year. I think John Proctor was tested the most because he lied just so people would stop accusing and causing all the trouble. He also had to die so his sons wouldn't be ashamed later on in life. Sad, but that's how the story went.
